A man who allegedly threatened two people with a knife and barricaded himself inside a unit at Mayfield has been taken to the Mater Hospital for treatment.
Police described the operation, which unfolded at Carrington Street at Mayfield on Sunday, as a "siege situation".
Emergency services were called to the unit about 10.30am on Sunday following reports of a dispute between neighbours.
When Newcastle City Police District officers arrived, they were told a man had allegedly threatened two people with a knife.
No injuries were reported, but as police were asking questions, a 50-year-old man barricaded himself inside a unit.
Specialist police, including negotiators, established a perimeter around the home and tried to speak with the man.
The hours-long operation came to an end when police finally entered the unit about 9.35pm and arrested the man.
He was taken to Newcastle Police Station, before being taken to hospital for treatment.
Police inquiries are continuing.
