The Chicago Bears are benching wide receiver Chase Claypool.
Claypool will be inactive for Sunday’s game against the Broncos, as first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. It will be the first game where Claypool is inactive.
Buy Bears TicketsThe move comes after Claypool’s comments to the media this week, where he questioned whether the coaching staff was putting him in the best position to succeed.
This isn’t the first time Claypool has caused a stir this season. He was criticized for his poor effort in the season opener against the Green Bay Packers, where he later apologized to his team.
A report from Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer also indicated Claypool could be “shipped out” if this continued. Well, safe to say that’s officially a realistic outcome at this point.
Chicago acquired Claypool, a former second-round pick, from the Steelers last November. They traded what turned into the No. 32 pick in the 2023 NFL draft. The trade has been a complete disaster for the Bears.
With Claypool sidelined, Rapoport noted receiver Equanimeous St. Brown will be active for the first time this season.
As you can imagine, Bears (and NFL) fans had plenty to say about Claypool being benched. Whether it was being happy the team is finally taking accountability or wallowing in the fact the trade has become a complete failure.
#DaBears Wide Receiver Chase Claypool will be Inactive today.
I think it’s fair to say that mid season trade was an abject failure at all levels.

Good for the #Bears on making Chase Claypool inactive.
There needs to be some sort of accountability for him, and this is a nice start. I’d say this is the kick in the pants he needs, but I think it’s too little too late for Claypool in Chicago.

I don't want to tell Bears fans I told you so about Chase Claypool… but it was an awful trade from the start. https://t.co/xAAy0CRGrH

Chase Claypool has all the talent in the world but is missing a piece in his head and/or I’m his heart. That’s probably cheesy and cliche but how else can you explain a guy that big and athletic being on his second team and having only one good year?
— Sam Householder (@SamHouseholder) October 1, 2023
I said it all week.
This was the week to keep your head down and get to work. https://t.co/xuNkWZiNPo

What’s happened with Chase Claypool is such a bummer. Talent for days. https://t.co/AHRb88ubPf

Hey, look, accountability.
Good moves. #Bears https://t.co/0Yk5YrF4NF

Well, that kills any lingering hope for Chase to be shown that trade worked…….another day another …. https://t.co/ueatimxw0J pic.twitter.com/IbkeKrmQ2l

This is a sad fall from grace IMO. He had so much potential coming out of Notre Dame and to the Steelers. https://t.co/oLSEmrJNKz

Conversations in August on this app about when Chase Claypool should get a contract extension were always funny and pure fantasy. https://t.co/QFt8r7Hxam

The Bears and Claypool divorce is evident. Too bad they won’t get a return like the Steelers did when they traded him to the Bears 🙃 https://t.co/jMrSgcrVQx
— Troy King (@TKingMode) October 1, 2023
Chase was right, the Bears weren’t using him correctly.
NOW they are https://t.co/wQdXN09X5J

I’m all for making EQ active, but making Claypool inactive is stupid. We aren’t going to get anything for him now in a trade. https://t.co/86uSW4cZA9

The #Bears trade for Claypool was, then & now, a disaster.
Just zero reason to give up the 32nd overall pick. https://t.co/P0Tq5cE6Q9

Big statement from the Bears leadership. They are clearly annoyed by what Chase said on Friday, and the result is benching him.
After much anticipation in the off-season Claypool has failed to deliver big time.#bears https://t.co/vmRPSzlGkp

They traded a first round pick for this guy.
It’s neck and neck between the Bears and Raiders for the worst run nfl team https://t.co/hM1gjLQukU

If you were wondering how it is so quiet around the Bears this past week after the eventful week before that, here's the answer – they kept the best for game day.🤦😂 This franchise gonna kill me one day.😂 https://t.co/ITLvKdpYL7

Man where to even begin with Claypool. A problem on the field and off. Trading for him is front and center at the talks to fire Ryan Poles along with the coaching staff. The warning signs were there. https://t.co/C8VteF8CgM
— One Chicago Sports (@1ChicagoSports) October 1, 2023
Poles sending a message that if you speak out you won’t be here or play. He’s also setting up for Fields to be replaced. Poles and everyone under him need to go but it will be the players that go. Being a Bears fan sucks https://t.co/XuozkSCAjQ

Those comments Claypool made the other day likely prompted this decision. Bears playing the F around and find out game https://t.co/QRtVq6zqhh

Chase Claypool: “So, will I be playing today?

It’s been 334 days since the franchise traded a 2022 second-round pick for Claypool…not even a full calendar year 😬 https://t.co/dDnBO7pTfY
— Brandon Loree (@Brandoniswrite) October 1, 2023
surely THIS will turn the season around https://t.co/ocVAEjyXXO
— drew (@cptnkarl) October 1, 2023
So George Pickens can’t be taken due to ChArAcTeR
Velus Jones is taken in the 3rd instead, along with a 3rd given up to sign Byron Pringle
But they suck, so we still need a WR
32 overall is traded for the guy Pickens beat out
And now he’s inactive, due to character 😂😂😂 https://t.co/hhqMAlISWD
— Will Applebee (@NOTSCWill) October 1, 2023
So not doing his job in Week 1 wasn't enough to get benched, so instead he told media the coaches weren't using him right. NOW he's benched 😜 https://t.co/FbvlKVrn34

Finally, the Bears are using Chase properly #Schmuck https://t.co/1042iwWq1t

Hoping its more of preparation reasons and not because of comments. If comments this regime is so soft https://t.co/9lRblHzEhL

Poles is a joke. Claypool is a joke. Lost their high 2nd round pick for this guy. Smh. Kevin Warren needs to clean house asap. https://t.co/EJvXcGZoPz
