TUI to expand to train tickets instead of short-haul flights

Major holiday and airline operator TUI will offer customers train tickets instead of short-haul flights to discourage excessive plane travel.

The operator wants to offer an alternative to short-haul flights and is making the move in its Netherlands section of the business, and if successful could move across the UK. Six routes have been chosen for the rail journeys instead of plane travel for TUI customers in the Netherlands.

City breaks to Copenhagen, Prague, Vienna, Venice, Milan and Florence, will now be offered as rail journeys due to a collaboration between TUI and train travel start-up Green City Trip, reports The Mirror.

“Traveling more sustainably means offering your customers different transport options And trains are definitely part of that”, Arjan Kers, managing director of TUI Netherlands, said.

"Where the train can be an equivalent replacement for the airplane, we will gladly put this in the spotlight. And even where it is not a replacement but a valuable addition, we want to draw attention to it."

Entrepreneur Hessel Winkelman of Green City Trip has said the train plans also saves on price and stress for customers. He added: "In the travel world you hear from everyone that it has to be more sustainable.

""Now the deed is followed by the word by the greatest. The train also saves on price and stress. Just think of those long queues and cancellations at Schiphol."

TUI are currently offering £200 off when customers enter the code RELAX at checkou t. Shoppers can save £100 per booking when they spend £750, or save £200 when they spend £2,000 on TUI holidays. This deal is for holidays departing from Sunday, May 1 to Thursday, June 30, 2022. To claim this discount, head to the website, here.
