Donald Trump and his billionaire ally Elon Musk have begun initiating the mass layoff of federal employees as the new administration strives to shrink the government’s workforce, with Musk saying he wants to “delete entire agencies” in the interest of achieving greater efficiency and reducing bureaucracy.

Meanwhile, the president’s controversial nominee to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F Kennedy Jr, looks set to be confirmed by the Senate today.
