President Donald Trump’s ballroom expansion at the White House has hit a hiccup. After Trump told his architect that he wants a chandelier so heavy in the Oval Office that it threatened the structure of the ceiling, and after he tried to push through a ballroom design that would be bigger than the actual White House itself, the architect has hit pause and is officially asking for restraint.
The Daily Beast reports that Trump is planning a ballroom that is 90,000 sq. feet. The only issue is that the White House is almost half that size at 55,000 sq. feet. For the architect, James McCrery II, that breaks a cardinal rule in architecture — an extension should never engulf the building it’s attached to. That runs the risk of making something that was initially built to complement become an ugly monstrosity.
