Travel expert calls for school summer holidays to be shortened

  • Advantage Travel Partnership chief executive Julia Lo Bue-Said has renewed calls to shorten the traditional six-week school summer break.
  • The industry consortium, alongside the UK Outbound Travel Group, proposes redistributing two summer weeks to the October and February half-terms.
  • It is argued that concentrating family travel into six weeks inflates holiday prices and overburdens airports, airlines, and resorts.
  • Increasingly hot European summers during July and August are also making mid-summer travel more challenging for holidaymakers.
  • Currently, parents in England face fines of £80 per child for taking pupils out of school for unauthorised term-time holidays.
