Public transport operator Translink has committed to carrying out a feasibility study to explore the possibility of reopening the Knockmore train line.
The line, which ran between Lisburn and Antrim closed to passengers in 2003. More than £2 million has been spent maintaining the line since it was mothballed.
In recent years, a campaign to see it reopened and a stop added at Belfast International Airport.

Welcoming the move, Lagan Valley MLA David Honeyford said that the line has potential to foster economic growth.
"This is great news and I am confident the study will show the benefits that could flow from reopening the line," he said.
“An efficient infrastructure is a must for a thriving economy. For years I have been campaigning for better infrastructure, including the reopening of the Knockmore to Antrim railway line.
“The Knockmore Line has the potential to foster huge economic growth by connecting Lisburn, Ballinderry and Glenavy to the rapidly developing Eastern Economic Corridor. This will then increase the new opportunities for manufacturing that exist as a result. Businesses will always move to areas with good infrastructure to help reduce costs and travel times."
Mr Honeyford added that as populations in these areas grow, it will be important to encourage the use of public transport to ease road congestion.
“Translink already have plans to start construction of the new Lisburn West Halt at Flush Park with Park and Ride facilities, and I look forward to this important work starting," he added.
"Reopening the Knockmore Line is the next logical step to improve connectivity and plan further advances, including links to the International Airport.
"At a time of financial crisis, government needs to be investing in infrastructure projects to give an economic boost to our area.”
A Translink spokesperson added: “We are currently seeking funding to undertake a feasibility study for re-opening of the Antrim to Lisburn railway line.
“The study will consider the passenger demand and operational model for the line, including a potential connection to Belfast International Airport, and capacity constraints with the existing rail network.”
