Transition to new electronic data system for vehicles means a pause in county clerk operations

A statewide migration of data in the Commonwealth’s vehicle information system will mean a disruption in certain activities in county clerk offices. The changeover in electronic processing will impact renewing of car license tags as well as vehicle and boat titling and transfers, disabled parking permit issuance, and license plate issuance. Fayette County Clerk Susan Lamb said there will be nine days the end of December and into January when no processing will occur.

“If you or your family members or your friends have birthdays in December and you need to renew your tags before the end of December I am urging everybody to come on or before Friday December 22nd to take care of your business,” said Lamb.

Lamb said that request pertains to mail-in, on-line, or walk-in business. The across the state break in services is necessary to allow for the optimal transfer of more than 350 million records.

Lamb said some services will still be carried out in the clerk’s office during this time.

“While out motor vehicles will not be operational our election and our land records are going to be open this whole time during normal business hours,” said Lamb.

Lamb said the filing deadline for candidates running for offices in Congress, the state legislature, and Lexington City Council is January fifth.

Lamb noted between three to eight hundred renewal requests come in daily. Although her office will be open on December 27th and 28th, Lamb added waiting until then could mean standing in long lines.

Lamb said her office will re-open for in-person motor vehicle business on January 16th.
