Train passenger praised for not moving bag so man could sit by her

A train passenger has been praised by people online for refusing to move her bag so a man could sit next to her on a train that was “nearly empty”. Explaining what happened on Reddit, the woman asked others whether they felt she did the right thing - and most took her side, describing the man as “creepy”.

The anonymous woman claims only five or six people were in the same carriage when the incident happened, and says she sat in a four-seater section, made herself comfortable and placed her belongings on the other nearby seats. But then a man in his “late forties or early fifties” approached her and demanded: “Move your bag”.

The woman, who says she's in her 30s, added the man's behaviour “puzzled” her and so she asked if he really needed to sit there given there were plenty of other seats available, the Mirror reports. But he insisted he did, so she moved out of his way and took her things to a different four-seater section, where she sat down.

But she was shocked to find that the man followed her, and again said, “move your bag”. The woman explained: “I answered that he had been wanting that certain seat that I vacated for him, so I don't see why he would want to switch seats.

“He scoffed and explained that it was not about the specific seat but about 'entitled people who think their bags deserve a seat'. I told him that I moved once for him and wouldn't move again.

“He made a movement as if he wanted to grab my bag and I raised my voice saying 'don't you f****** dare!' He started lamenting about entitled people again. I told him 'I moved for you. There are hundreds of free seats on this train, sit somewhere else'.”

She claims he then called her an “a******” before going to sit somewhere else where he had a loud phone conversation in which he complained about “entitled b******”. The woman added: “To be clear, when a train fills up, I of course gather my stuff and vacate seats around me so that others can sit.

"But I don't see why I should let some rando boss me around and invade my personal space for no reason.” On Reddit, the vast majority of people took the woman's side.

@Mother_of_Peacocks said: “This guy is a freak. Hopefully you won't see him again, that is so weird.” And @Thundercatmania commented: “I hate this! I do not understand why people, on a completely empty/almost empty train want to sit next to you. The guy is a complete weirdo and sounds really controlling.”

@Dongusamericanus wrote: “The guy wasn't only a creep but unhinged also. Good on you for yelling at him, you did the perfect thing.” And @Punkrockpm added: “This guy is a creeper and looking to cause trouble with you, a woman. Good for you not putting up with it.”

@Fuzzy_Judgement63 put: “I would have told the guy after the second encounter that he was the one acting entitled by forcing his opinions on complete strangers, and that he was being a creepy perv by repeatedly wanting to sit so close to you.” And @Calm_Violinist5356 said: “He wanted to teach you a lesson or something. Glad you didn't let him. Misogynistic AF.”
