On Sunday night, the unexpected star of the BAFTAs was Robert Aramayo, the 33-year-old star of I Swear. In I Swear, Aramayo portrays Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson, who was also present at the awards ceremony.
When the film was first released, it was praised for presenting Tourette’s syndrome (TS) as part of human diversity rather than spectacle. Rather than reducing TS to the caricature of uncontrollable swearing, as has often happened in the past, the film depicted it as a condition characterised by involuntary tics and by the physical pain, fatigue, and bodily strain those tics could involve.
