Tottenham star Heung-min Son ‘honoured’ to tie Spurs legend Jermain Defoe on all-time scorers list

Heung-min Son has vowed to keep climbing Tottenham’s record scorers list after equalling Jermain Defoe’s goal haul for the north Londoners.

Son notched his 12th Premier League strike of the season in what proved one of few bright moments in Saturday’s demoralising 3-2 home defeat by Bournemouth.

The 30-year-old matched Defoe’s Spurs tally of 143 goals, moving level with the ex-England striker in two more matches, having made 365 appearances in his eight years at the club.

The South Korea star now sits equal sixth in Spurs’ all-time scoring charts, and trails 1961 double winner Cliff Jones by just 16 goals.

Harry Kane might be out in front of everyone when it comes to Spurs scoring feats now, but Son insisted he is not in any mood to slow down.

“I think I’ve got a few more years to play yet, so I will try to keep scoring more goals,” Son told Standard Sport. “I want to go a little bit higher, so I will do my best.”

Spurs’ 10th defeat of the Premier League season left interim boss Cristian Stellini’s side with a daunting task for a top-four finish, especially with Newcastle, Manchester United and Liverpool all to play next.

Son revealed his pride in reaching Defoe’s Tottenham goal tally, with the former England hitman having proved prolific across two Spurs spells, from 2004 to 2008 and 2009 to 2014.

“It’s a big honour to have been playing for a few years now at this club,” he said. “Obviously I’m not really focused to be tied with this goalscoring record, obviously I just want to help the team.

“But it’s a big honour to be compared with Jermain Defoe, who is a Spurs legend and scored so many goals for Spurs. So I think to tie this goal tally makes me hugely proud.”
