Tottenham news: Richarlison sent 'step up' warning as Steven Bergwijn's preference revealed

Although there were some ropey moments in the early weeks of his tenure at Tottenham Hotspur, it feels as though standards at the football club lifted as soon as Antonio Conte came through the door.

Finishing in fourth was a critical achievement for Spurs and naturally the Champions League brings a financial boost and increased gravitas. However, it's unlikely that a winner like Conte will be content with making up the numbers in the Premier League nor in European competition.

It's why it's no surprise to see Tottenham continue to be linked with a number of players, that despite making savvy additions already in this transfer window.

What forward would be best suited to compete with Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski? Let us know in the comments section below!

Townsend sends Richarlison warning

Everton winger Andros Townsend has said a move from the Toffees to Tottenham Hotspur would not be a guaranteed "step up" for Richarlison.

Spurs are said to be keen on signing the Brazil international in a potential £60 million deal this summer. Richarlison excelled in the latter part of the campaign, helping Everton stay afloat in the Premier League following a disastrous season.

Despite Everton's plight and the excitement currently building at Spurs, Townsend was quick to talk up his and Richarlison's current employers.

"I think you're being slightly disrespectful by calling Spurs a step up," said the former Tottenham winger.

"I think Everton is one of the biggest clubs in England, one of the most historic clubs, one of the biggest fanbases. He's already a hero at Everton for what he's done. He's a fantastic player and towards the end of the season the goals he scored to keep us up."

Bergwijn preference revealed

According to some reports, Tottenham have made an offer of cash and Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn in part-exchange to Everton for Richarlison.

Bergwijn joined Spurs under Jose Mourinho in 2020. After an encouraging start, he struggled for consistent form and fell down the pecking order last season following the January arrival of Dejan Kulusevski.

While Spurs may be keen to use the 24-year-old as a makeweight in a potential move for Richarlison, according to reports in the Netherlands Berwijn's desire is still to join Eredivisie giants Ajax.

Bale decision criticised

Former England international forward Stan Collymore has shared his disappointment at the decision of former Tottenham Hotspur great Gareth Bale to join Major League Soccer outfit Los Angeles FC.

Bale's contract with Real Madrid expired at the end of last season and he has moved to the United States in an attempt to remain sharp ahead of the 2022 World Cup with Wales.

However, Collymore has claimed that Bale still has what's required to play in English football's top flight.

"I’m sure he sat down and thought, ‘Look, going to play full-on at Cardiff against a load of Championship opponents who all want a piece of me or Brentford where they may lose more games than they win, LA instead seems a good halfway house'," he said.

"But I can’t help thinking a player who has won what he has could at least have looked at a Crystal Palace, Brentford or Brighton and said, ‘I still have something to give and I want to show the Premier League what it is"
