Todd Cantwell Rangers substitution explained by Philippe Clement and Scott Wright

Philippe Clement has revealed that Todd Cantwell was substituted at half-time against Hearts due to a tactical tweak.

The former Norwich midfielder was hooked after a quiet opening 45 minutes and replaced by Scott Wright who made a big impact as Rangers booked their spot in the League Cup final.

Wright grabbed one goal, while captain James Tavernier notched a double and Clement was delighted with the impact of the former Aberdeen midfielder.

Some suggested that Cantwell was injured at the break, but a yellow card to his name also played a part in his substitution.

Clement explained: “It was more a tactical one, more so with his yellow card, I didn’t want to take chances with that.

“With Scott we know also he has energy. I want to rotate with the two of them like I have done the past two weeks because I want fresh players up front who can make directions but also do the defensive job.

“So just a tactical one, nothing special.”

Wright also spoke at full-time as he revealed a nod from his manager before the break.

He said: “The manager gave me a quick heads up before the end of the first half saying he wanted to bring me on.

“All I wanted to do was to just bring a bit of creativity to the game which I thought I could bring and just have an impact on the game.

"I am delighted. It is the step that we wanted to take, to get to the final.

“I am delighted we got there.

“The manager has come in and he has been really clear about what he wants and what he wants to change.

“He has just drip-fed it just now, he doesn't want to change too much just yet.

“But I think you can see out on the pitch the little changes he wants to make and how he wants us to be.”
