Today is ‘Quitter’s Day’ — the point in January when New Year’s resolutions quietly (or not so quietly) fall apart. For the uninitiated, it’s the day that most of us abandon the ambitious promises we made to ourselves just weeks earlier when we thought we might conveniently wake up on January 1st as different people. People who not only have the wherewithal to wake up at 6 am to journal and do a quick round of calisthenics, but the zeal to boot.
The chippy ‘Quitter’s Day’ moniker comes from a study by Strava — which, again, for the uninitiated, is essentially Instagram for athletes — tracking when users were most likely to drop off their shiny new fitness goals. In a glimmer of good news, Strava data now puts ‘Quitter’s Day’ as the second Tuesday of January (yes, I’m afraid you might have to slog it out for a few more days yet), but the original Friday stuck and now there’s a second ‘New Year, New Me’ cohort cheering for the desertion of resolutions with much the same enthusiasm as was met with starting them such a short time ago.
