Tim Henman makes Novak Djokovic Wimbledon declaration despite Covid vaccine chaos

Tim Henman believes Novak Djokovic will be able to play at Wimbledon this year even if he remains unvaccinated.

The Serb has made it clear he does want to get the Covid-19 jab, even if it means being unable to compete at some of tennis' biggest tournaments.

The world number one is the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion, but is in danger of being unable to play in Paris in May.

Last month, France approved a vaccine rule which will prohibit persons from entering sports arenas unless they are inoculated.

"The rule is simple. The vaccine pass will be imposed, as soon as the law is promulgated, in establishments that were already subject to the health pass," the French government said.

"This will apply to everyone who is a spectator or a professional sportsperson. And this until further notice.

"Now, as far as Roland Garros is concerned, it's in May. The situation may change between now and then and we hope that it will be more favourable. So we'll see, but clearly there's no exemption."

Currently, people are able to enter sports venues in the UK without a vaccination and Henman believes this will remain the case come June.

When asked if Djokovic will be unable to grace SW19’s hallowed turf, Henman, who is on the Wimbledon committee, told BBC Radio Four: “I don’t think so.

"To get into the UK at the moment, those are the guidelines the Championship will be following at this stage.

“At this moment in time [rules about participation in the tournament are] going to be government-led.”

Although Djokovic has a burning desire to end his career with the most Grand Slam titles, he is willing to sacrifice opportunities to do so by not getting the vaccine.

"Yes, that is the price that I'm willing to pay," he told the BBC. "Because the principles of decision making on my body are more important than any title or anything else.

"I'm trying to be in tune with my body as much as I possibly can."

Djokovic believes in the freedom to "choose what you put in your body" and has so far decided against getting the vaccination "based on all the information that I got".

Djokovic is due to play for the first time this year at the Dubai Tennis Championships next week, and is on the entry list for Indian Wells in March.

However, he must show a valid proof of full vaccination to play the Californian event, and given the fact he has not been inoculated, Djokovic may have to watch the tournament from the sidelines.
