Tiger Woods Declines Opportunity to Captain 2027 Ryder Cup Team As He Seeks Treatment

Tiger Woods will no longer be considered an option to captain Team USA at next year’s Ryder Cup, the PGA of America announced in a statement. Woods himself chose to not be in the running anymore.

Woods shared on Tuesday that he would be stepping away from all golf activities for the foreseeable future as he intends to get treatment. This decision stemmed from a two-car rollover crash Woods was involved in last Friday, causing him to be arrested for a DUI. He passed the breathalyzer test, but refused to do a urine test to result in the arrest. He pleaded not guilty to the DUI charge. It was later revealed that Woods had two hydrocodone pills in his pocket at the time of the crash. This is the fourth time the 50-year-old has been involved in a traffic issue that involved law enforcement. His inpatient treatment will take place outside of the United States due to privacy concerns.

The golfer was looking to make his captaincy debut at the 2027 Ryder Cup, but that opportunity will take the back seat for now.

“The PGA of America stands in full support of Tiger Woods as he steps away to focus on his health and well-being,” the organization said in a statement on Wednesday. “During this time, we are keeping Tiger in our thoughts and prayers, with sincere hope for his strength, comfort, and recovery. ... We commend Tiger for prioritizing his long-term health and deeply respect the courage it takes to make such a personal decision. Tiger has shared with us that he will not serve as the Captain of the 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup Team and we support his decision.”

As a player, Woods has competed on eight Ryder Cup teams dating back to his debut in 1997. Surprisingly, he’s only been part of one winning Team USA squad, though, in ‘99. He last competed in the 2018 Ryder Cup. Woods holds a 4–9–1 record in foursomes, a 5–10–0 record in four ball and a 4–2–2 record in single matches. He served as a vice captain to Davis Love III in 2016.

Woods’s car crash not only barred his opportunity to be a Ryder Cup captain, but he also will no longer have the chance to compete in next week’s Masters, where he is a five-time champion. He recently made his return to golf at the TGL finals, sparking hope amongst golf fans that he would return to Augusta National this year. But, that won’t happen now as he seeks treatment.
