Our weather is going to stay unsettled and miserable as we ring in 2023 with wintry showers and thunderstorms on the way over the next few days.
Met Éireann has said the weather will remain changeable, unsettled and cold before turning a little milder as we head into next week.
2022 will end shrouded in cloud with "showery outbreaks of rain, while some sleet showers are possible over higher ground to the north and west."

Met Éireann added: "There will also be a continued chance for hail and isolated thunderstorms, mostly in the south and east. Coldest in west Connacht and west Ulster where the best of the drier conditions with clear spells will develop with lows of -1 to +1, elsewhere highs will range from 2 to 6 degrees with a few mist and fog patches developing also in mostly light variable breezes."
Forecasters say Sunday will be a rather chilly day on New Year's Day with "sunny spells and showers, some heavy with hail and isolated thunderstorms possible."
"Remaining quite chilly with highest temperatures generally ranging between 3 and 8 degrees in moderate west or northwest breezes, some of the showers may turn wintry especially over higher ground in the north and west during the evening.
"Becoming cold and frosty in many areas on Sunday night with long clear spells and just isolated showers, some wintry with possible hail. Lowest temperatures of -3 to zero degrees. Areas of mist and fog will form in mostly light southwest breezes, with dense fog possible in parts."
Heading into the first full week on 2023, we will endure a foggy and frosty start on Monday.
"Fog will be slow to clear and may linger locally in parts leading to hazardous driving conditions. Otherwise Monday will be bright and largely dry day with low winter sunshine and just a few showers, mainly affecting coastal counties of the south and west. Maximum temperatures generally ranging between 3 and 7 degrees in light or moderate southerly breezes," Met Éireann's latest forecast said.
Monday night will be dry and quite cold with clear spells and a touch of frost in the north of the country.
"However, turning less cold later as rain pushes in from the south. Lowest temperatures of between 0 and +4 degrees early in the night. A fresh to strong southerly breeze will develop overnight.
"Patchy rain will clear on early Tuesday and it will become largely dry for a time in the morning. However, a further spell of rain will spread from the south. A milder day with highest temperatures of between 7 and 12 degrees, mildest in the south. There will be a fresh to strong and gusty southerly breeze. Windy on Tuesday night with widespread rain or drizzle. Mild with temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in strong and gusty southwest winds."
Forecasters predict a fresh and blustery day on Wednesday with sunny spells and showers, the showers frequent across the western half of the country.
"Highest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees in fresh and gusty westerly winds, easing towards evening. Largely dry at first on Wednesday night, but a spell of rain will spread from the Atlantic later. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees.
"Mostly cloudy on Thursday with outbreaks of rain, heavy at times. Highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees in the north and west, ranging 8 to 11 degrees in the east and south."
