Three escaped inmates from Grenada have been charged in the killing of a U.S. couple whose catamaran they hijacked, according to police reports. The suspects, aged 23 to 30, faced charges including capital murder, escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery, and kidnapping. One of the accused was also charged with rape.
The men allegedly broke out of a police holding cell on February 18 and seized control of a catamaran owned by the American couple while they were on board. The victims, described as experienced sailors, were believed to have been thrown overboard as the suspects sailed to St. Vincent, where they were apprehended on February 21.
Following their capture, the three men were deported from St. Vincent. The victims' bodies have not yet been recovered. The couple, known for their participation in sailing events, had been cruising in the eastern Caribbean and had plans to spend the winter in the region.
