Thomas Tuchel faces £105m Chelsea dilemma despite answering Marina Granovskaia's transfer puzzle

At some point in your life, you'd have come across the infamous shape sorter game growing up as a child which just so happens to be the perfect analogy for Chelsea's transfer situation under Thomas Tuchel.

Having not been handed all the tools that he warrants at Chelsea to mount a charge for the Premier League title, the Blues boss has made ends meet pushing square pegs through round holes.

And, while Tuchel's title rivals are identifiable by simply looking at a team sheet, the 48-year-old has become renowned for his tactical fluidity and efficiency, unlocking players like Hakim Ziyech whose future at Stamford Bridge once looked uncertain.

In doing so, the Chelsea boss, who arrived at Stamford Bridge nearly a year ago, looks to have finally solved Marina Granovskaia's puzzle sent from Amsterdam, but has now opened a new can of worms.

Frank Lampard signed Ziyech in February 2020 for a deal worth £33 million, arriving as a wide right-sided playmaker who would bring creative nouse, flair, pressing ability and a world-class threat in transitions.

With one search of his name on YouTube, it isn't long before you find the 28-year-old's marketable talent - a starry-eyed, left-footed switch of play - but it hasn't been plain sailing for Ziyech in west London.

The Moroccan has struggled to reproduce the numbers that he once enjoyed at Ajax since touching down on English soil and, while he has excelled in moments, Ziyech looks to have finally been unlocked by Tuchel.

However, his resurgence creates a new dilemma for Tuchel, which can be imagined as a game of Battleships, but you are restricted to just one column.

Chelsea currently house three left-footed forwards, Ziyech, Romelu Lukaku and Kai Havertz, whereby the latter has seemingly lost his place in the starting eleven.

In each of the west Londoners last two games, Tuchel has balanced his right and left-footed 'front-runners' - players whose primary objective is to pose a threat on goal, whether it be a 4-2-2-2 or a 4-3-3.

While Havertz's absence in the starting eleven could be for reasons unbeknown beyond Cobham training ground, Tuchel must look to reignite the 22-year-old's flame next.

Chelsea's £72 million signing from Bayer Leverkusen has, more lately, been defined as a false nine but as the Blues experiment with different shapes, Havertz must be prepared to conform to Tuchel's tactical fluidity, whether that be a ten, nine, inside or wide forward.

The Blues' club-record signing holds an aura of invincibility from the firing line, and so does Mount in some respects - while three left-footed forward wouldn't be unnatural, Havertz faces an uphill battle.
