Dr Sara Kayat explained the dangers of hand, foot and mouth disease during the summer.
This Morning's health expert, Dr Sara Kayat, joined the show to give a rundown of all the warning signs parents, travellers and sun-seekers must take notice of during the summer months. She opened her segment with information on differentiating bug bites and the amount of lotion to apply but a warning about a "highly contagious" infection left presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary concerned.
Dr Sara explained hand, foot and mouth diseases is prevalent during the summer months as children will be sharing towels to dry off and infections can be spread easily through contact. She warned the disease is "highly contagious" and said it can be incredibly painful if located in the mouth

She said: "It affects, as it suggests, the hands, feet and mouth but it can also affect the buttocks areas and other parts of the body." As an image appeared on screen, Alison noted how uncomfortable the red sores looked.
Dr Sara added: "It is, it can affect how well [children] eat and drink so it's all about getting them supportive treatment in terms of gels inside their mouths or a nice lolly pop to cool them down."
Dermot mentioned his son, Kasper, previously contracted the infection but noted it fades by itself which Dr Sara confirmed. She said: "Yeah, it goes by itself, it's contagious but most kids and most adults have had it at some point."
