Shearling jackets have dominated my Instagram and TikTok feeds for the past few weeks now and it was the same last year, so I've finally taken the plunge and bought the Toteme Signature shearling coat.
It is much more than what I'd usually spend on a coat (or my mortgage), but I know a good sartorial investment when I see one. Firstly, it is very warm, which is not to be sniffed at, and secondly it is made of quality, long-lasting materials: heavyweight leather on the outside and warm shearling on the inside.
Thirdly - and lastly - it is the definition of timeless, with its oversized shape, shawl lapels and discreet silver zipper and front in-seam pockets. For me, these tick off all the main boxes for a big purchase.
Shearling jackets and coats are by no means a new winter coats trend. The 70s-inspired staple has been all over the catwalk for the past seasons, at Chloé, Alexander McQueen, Loewe and Celine to name just a few.
But I've seen it crop up more and more lately on my Instagram, and it's convinced me to finally invest.
And the outerwear is an investment for sure, since even on the high street, you're looking at around a £400 starting price. However because they are made of leather and shearling, they not only last forever, but they're one of those rare fashion pieces that actually look even better as they age.
That said, there are some very good faux leather and faux shearling options out there, so I've added a few in my edit for you.
In the warmer months, try layering your shearling jacket over a floaty floral dress or utilitarian jumpsuit. As for footwear, it'll complement your best trainers as well as cute heels or ankle boots.
