Thiago Silva inspires World Cup and Brazil trend as forgotten Chelsea loanee appears in thriller

The World Cup group stage is now reaching its conclusion. Today sees Group A and Group B play their final matches of the group, with four matches set to take place.

Ecuador vs Senegal (3pm), Netherlands vs Qatar (3pm), Iran vs USA (7pm) and Wales vs England (7pm) is the running order for the day. Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly are expected to both start for Senegal against Ecuador, while there are other Chelsea players set to be in action.

Christian Pulisic is expected to take to the pitch against Iran as he looks to build on an impressive display versus England. Meanwhile, for the Three Lions, Conor Gallagher and Mason Mount could both feature against Wales, with Ethan Ampadu on the other side.

But before we head into today's action, it's important to round up what happened yesterday. football.london has you sorted in that regard with a round-up of the two Chelsea players who featured for their countries on Monday.

Thiago Silva

The 38-year-old defender continues to defy physics with his performances. Granted, Brazil didn't have too much defending to do in their 1-0 win over Switzerland, but when they did, Silva was calm and composed alongside Marquinhos at the back.

Brazil, who are the favourites to win the World Cup in Qatar, are yet to concede a shot on target in the tournament. That cannot be put solely down to Silva's performances, but the Chelsea centre-back is certainly a huge factor in that.

The Selecao will face tougher tests along the way, but you wouldn't put anything past Silva. At 38, he is still surprising even some of football's most popular pundits.

"They push up the pitch unbelievably," Gary Neville said on ITV Sport when referring to Silva. "I don’t know how Thiago Silva at his age pushes up the pitch, to get in front of your forward all the time to try and win it is one of the hardest things to do, he’s still doing that late into his 30s, it’s unbelievable."

Baba Rahman

Yes, he still plays for Chelsea. Technically, anyway.

Rahman has just less than two years remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge. The left-back came on for Ghana in the late stages of their dramatic 3-2 victory over South Korea on Monday afternoon. Well done, Baba.
