The vibrant Scottish streets named most colourful in the UK

There's no doubt that Scotland's towns, villages and cities always leave a lasting impression on people who visit them but some streets just stand out that little bit more. Three, in particular, have been named among the most colourful in the UK.

To discover the UK’s most colourful streets, Dulux ran images of some of the country's most famously colourful neighbourhoods through a colour identifier tool to determine which streets display the highest number of different shades.

The research revealed that Scotland is home to some of the country's most colourful streets, with three of the top 10 streets being based there: Victoria Street in Edinburgh, Main Street in Tobermory and Quay Street at Portree Harbour on the Isle of Skye all featured in the top 10.

A spokesperson for Dulux said: "It's easy to think that the UK’s unwavering obsession with colourful houses is down to Instagram and the prettiness they provide for our feeds, but Brits actually have a long history of painting houses in bright hues.

"From sailors using paint to navigate home in the fog to the working class using natural materials such as berries and fruit to paint over limestone surfaces, the result is an array of so-called ‘rainbow’ streets across the UK.

"But which street is the most colourful?"

Victoria Street, Edinburgh, Scotland (6th overall with 10 colours on display)

The curved cobble-stoned Victoria Street in Edinburgh is a heavenly combination of picturesque shopfronts, colourful masonry houses and stone facades, making it one of the prettiest streets in the UK.

Main Street, Tobermory, Isle of Mull, Scotland (9th overall with 9 colours on display)

This fishing port in the North-West of Scotland has one of the country’s most colourful facades, making it a postcard-worthy spectacle. The home of Balamory, the colourful waterfront was chosen by the BBC for its childish vibrancy as the location for the popular children’s TV show.

Quay Street, Portree Harbour, Isle of Skye, Scotland (10th overall with 6 colours on display)

The final street on our list is also located on one of the Scottish isles, namely the Isle of Skye in the Inner Hebrides, where the colourful row of houses on Quay Street in Portree Harbour can be found. Indigoes, mint greens and blues form the quaint waterfront, contrasted by the deep green forest behind it.
