Start With the Privy Purse: Always Lead With What They Keep
Patel's first move with almost every reluctant ruler was not a demand, it was an offer. The privy purse guaranteed nobles a personal income and their titles for life. He was not asking them to lose; he was showing them what they retained. Chanakya wrote in the Arthashastra that a wise leader first identifies what the opponent values most and protects it visibly. In practice, this means: before you ask a resistant person for anything, name what they will not have to give up. A colleague who fears losing credit will cooperate once you confirm the credit stays theirs. A vendor who fears losing the relationship will negotiate once you make clear the relationship is not in question. Lead with the preserved thing, not the demanded thing.
