While the highest-grossing films of 2026 so far are massive blockbusters like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, it’s impossible to overlook just how much horror has dominated the box office. Much has been said about the overwhelming success of Obsession and Backrooms, but even other films, like Send Help and Scream 7, have made this yet another lucrative year for the genre.
But movie theaters aren’t the only place where horror is winning big; the genre has also had a rewarding 2026 in gaming. Resident Evil: Requiem, the series’ ninth mainline title, came out in February and sold over eight million copies, while the upcoming Silent Hill: Townfall and Hellraiser: Revival are sure to be moneymakers, too. That’s a lesson Hollywood will certainly be paying attention to: Zach Cregger’s new Resident Evil reboot film is tracking to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise, and Hollywood is undoubtedly planning more survival horror game adaptations… including a cinematic reboot of a beloved franchise that could stand to emulate Cregger’s approach.
