The ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Teaser Gives Us A Glimpse at Rhaenyra’s Queen Era

The fun, a.k.a. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is almost over. It’s time for Westeros to get serious again, as evidenced by the first official teaser for House of the Dragon Season 3, coming to HBO and HBOMax in June.

The teaser serves as a much-needed bit of place setting, reminding fans where everyone on #TeamBlack and #TeamGreen stand. Alicent (Olivia Cooke) returns from her covert trip to Dragonstone, where Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) convinced her to surrender. Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) is on the Iron Throne. Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) is lost in the woods with Larys Strong (Matthew Needham). Jace (Harry Collett) wants to step up and do more to advise and protect his family. The teaser promises a lot of fire and blood, both in the proverbial House Targaryen sense and the literal battle sense. Also swords, dirt, smoke, ash, Corlys (Steve Toussaint) the Sea Snake and his fleet, and all of the good HOTD stuff.

“You are the Queen of Dragons,” Daemon (Matt Smith) says, presumably to Rhaenyra. “You have an absolute power within your grasp. This is the moment you become queen.” Is it time? Is it finally time for TK’s daughter to take the Iron Throne? What will she lose on that path? It’s evident, even if you haven’t read George R. R. Martin’s fictional history book Fire & Blood, that she will lose a whole lot. (If you’re following along at home, the start of Season 3 should be the Battle of the Gullet.)

There’s still so much more to learn about ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3

The teaser, once again, shows James Norton as Ormund Hightower on the battlefield. He might be the only win that the Greens have this season, TBH! That said, if I’ve learned anything from House of the Dragon, the Dance of the Dragons is brutal. One should never get too attached to new characters. He’s the only new cast member that I can spot, personally, in this trailer. We don’t see Tommy Flanagan as Roderick Dustin, the leader of a key group of Northerners. Nor do we see upcoming characters Torrhen Manderly (Dan Fogler), Luthor Largent (Tom Cullen), Jon Roxton (Joplin Siptain), Adrian Redfort (Barry Sloane), and the one I’m looking forward to the most: Alysanne Blackwood (Annie Shapero). She’s Cregan Stark’s bisexual wife and an accomplished hunter… let us see her!!

Alicent teases the “new dragons” on the opposing side who should come into play this season. Who are these divas? If you recall, at the end of Season 2 Daemon’s daughter Lady Rhaena found a dragon just chilling in a valley. Most likely, that wild dragon is Sheepstealer. In Martin’s text, a girl called Nettles claims that dragon. What other dragons will join the fight in Season 3? What does Alicent know that I don’t? Additionally, on her own turf, is it finally time for Alicent and Viserys’ bonus son Daeron Targaryen (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) to finally join the Dance with his dragon? He has been conveniently out of town for the whole show. This and more awaits when House of the Dragon returns in June.
