The Easter eggs with the highest sugar content - and could be bad for your teeth

Dental experts have revealed which Easter eggs have the highest content of sugar and could therefore be bad for your teeth.

Expressdentist.com commissioned the study to find out which popular Easter eggs have the most amount of sugar per 100g.

A list of 78 chocolate eggs was collated from Tesco's website, which included all Easter eggs being sold by the supermarket this year, except for their own brand Tesco Easter eggs and nine niche Easter eggs.

Using data from tesco.com, the quantity of sugar per 100g was obtained for each egg. For multiple sizes, an average was taken.

The treats were then ranked according to their sugar content per 100g, with the dental experts saying the higher the sugar content, the worse the Easter egg could be for your teeth.

Coming in joint top for Easter eggs with the highest sugar content were Galaxy Ripple and Galaxy Minstrels Easter Eggs with 68g of sugar per 100g.

In second place was the Smarties Easter Egg with 65.35g of sugar per 100g and third place was M&M's Salted Caramel with 65g of sugar per 100g.

Following closely behind were Smarties Orange (64.9g), White Chocolate Twix (62g) and Creme Egg (61.5g), respectively ranking fourth, fifth and sixth.

Meanwhile, the egg with the least sugar, with only 29g per 100g, was Green & Black’s. The researchers said: "This is due to it being dark chocolate meaning it has a high cacao content and less sugar, giving the signature bitter taste."

In second place for lowest sugar content was Ferrero Collection with 39.9g of sugar. In third place was Ferrero Rocher with 41.8g of sugar per 100g. Both contain less sugar because of the high nut content, the dental experts said.
