The Chase viewers poke fun after contestant's embarrassing 'Edinburgh' question blunder

A contestant on The Chase this week made an embarrassing blunder when he mixed up a Rangers legend and a famous Edinburgh-born author.

On Monday's episode, participant Peter from Bristol buzzed when he heard the question: "Which Scotsman wrote the novel The Master of Ballantrae?".

His answer was Walter Smith — a Rangers icon best known for his two spells as manager of the club.

The correct answer was in fact Robert Louis Stevenson, primarily associated with his novels Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Twitter users were quick to pick up on the mistake, with many making jokes about the blunder.

One tweeted: "Someone just tried their luck with 'Walter Smith' in response to a question about a Scottish novelist".

"Please tell me the contestant wasn't Scottish," a second replied.

"Original edition of "Waverley" features an entire chapter about Richard Gough," a third quipped — implying that the contestant meant to answer Walter Scott.
