The usually stern faced and matter of fact Anne Hegerty broke tradition on The Chase by standing up to applaud Omid Djalili after seeing him off during a celebrity special.
Comedian Omid was ne of four stars to line up on the latest celeb edition of the hit ITV show, which aired at team time on Saturday. As well as him and team mates including Susan Calman, joining host Bradley Walsh, they were also given the company of Anne, as her quizzing alter ego The Governess. And, Omid won the admiration of Anne, Bradley, his fellow stars and the studio audience, after he, unlike many Chase contestants, decided to not play it safe as he took on the Chaser.
Rather than opting for the middle amount offered to him by Anne, Omid decided to go for broke and opt to battle it out with her in the hope of banking a huge £128,000. And Omid, who starred in the likes of Gladiator, Mean Machine and Notting Hill amongst many other films and shows, most definitely gave it his best shot, as it went down to the wire with the money and his place in the competition at stake.
Sadly for Omid, while he was on good form, so was Anne, and with just two questions left to make it safely through will £128,000, Omid faltered on a geography question, which Anne answered correctly. And Omid's unlucky exit was then sealed when he got a question on medicine wrong, while Anne got it right.
However, rather than looking smug and gloating about her victory, Anne, just like host Bradley, was full of respect and admiration for Omid, for taking a risk and pushing her right to the end. After Bradley told him: "What an effort that was, you went for it," Anne got out of her seat to award him a standing ovation and told Omid: "Can I just say Omid, you were absolutely awesome. I've never done this before..." applauded him as he walked off set.
