Tesco increases meal deal price to £3.50 - unless you sign up to a Clubcard

Tesco is hiking the cost of its meal deals from £3 to £3.50 unless you have one of its Clubcards.

Clubcard users can get a meal deal for £3 from next week. The supermarket is also adding its lunchtime meal deal to Clubcard Prices next week – letting its loyalty scheme members earn points for buying the popular lunch option.

They can then spend those points as discounts on future shopping, or on events like family days out to Alton Towers.

The supermarket chain is making the move from February 28.

There are 3,000 Tesco products now on Clubcard Prices.

As an extra bonus to Clubcard users, 2,000 Tesco stores will allow Costa hot drinks to be part of a meal deal for 12 weeks.

Normally a Costa hot drink would cost from £1.75 to £2.85 just by itself.

Tesco chief customer officer Alessandra Bellini said: “Adding our ever-popular lunchtime meal deal to Clubcard Prices is the latest way we’re rewarding our 20 million Clubcard members with exclusive deals on thousands of products.

“Clubcard Prices have already given millions of customers the power to lower the cost of their weekly shop – and all while earning points for money off their shopping or rewards like family days out at Alton Towers or a Disney+ subscription."

Tesco said the UK's favourite meal deal items include the chicken, bacon & stuffing sandwich, 500ml bottles of Coca-Cola and McCoy's flame-grilled steak crisps.

In January Tesco launched a new way for 20million customers to pay, save and pick up Clubcard points every time they spend in stores or online.

All Clubcard members can now apply online for Tesco Clubcard Pay+, which is a sort of pre-payment debit card provided by Tesco Bank.

Shoppers can add money The pilot scheme has seen more than £24million spent on 1.2million transactions using Clubcard Pay+ at Tesco and other retailers.

Tesco Clubcard Pay+ has also been used to pick up over 5.25million Clubcard points nationwide so far.and ringfence their grocery spend from any UK bank account into their Tesco Clubcard Pay+ account, using the Tesco Bank mobile banking app.

If you want, you can also use the pre-payment card in any shop, or for online spending.

But you can only spend cash you actively put onto the card - it won't let you spend money directly from a current account.

How does Tesco Clubcard Pay+ work?

Tesco Clubcard Pay+ account holders get a debit card which will also act as their Clubcard, replacing their current Clubcard.

The new scheme is provided by Tesco Bank and is available to Tesco Clubcard members who are resident in the UK and aged 18 or over.

The account can be applied for online and should only take a few minutes, with no impact on a customer’s credit rating.
