Sales of sunflower oil have risen by 27% as a decline of bottles in stores has been blamed on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
As Ukraine makes up 46% of the world’s sunflower oil production , it was initially encouraged by shoppers to stockpile oil in a similar fashion to many who were reported to purchase essentials in bulk pre-pandemic. Therefore, a subsequent decline in sunflower oil has largely contributed to the public awareness of the war in Ukraine, meaning that with low supply and high demand, prices have been skyrocketing.
With further pressure to access frying oil alternatives such as rapeseed or olive oil, supermarket chains such as Morrisons and Waitrose have begun rationing cooking oil , by limiting customers to two bottles of cooking oil per visit.
