'Terrible people': Donald Trump reignites feud with London Mayor Sadiq Khan as he blasts UK over Iran stance

Donald Trump appeared to reignite his feud with Sir Sadiq Khan by saying London has a “terrible Mayor” and “some terrible people”.

The US President also suggested Sir Keir Starmer was pandering to Muslim voters after the Prime Minister refused to join his strikes against Iran.

He claimed Britain “is not such a recognisable country” anymore and singled out the capital as a “a very different place”.

Speaking to The Sun about the UK, Trump said: “It’s also not such a recognisable country.

“I mean, you look at what happened over the last period of time and it’s very different.

“London is a very different place, with a terrible Mayor. You have a terrible Mayor there, some terrible people. But it’s a very different place.”

A spokesperson for the Sir Sadiq hit back, saying: “The Mayor is clearly still living rent free in Donald’s Trump’s head. He’s obsessed with him. Sadiq could probably claim squatters rights.”

Trump said that the UK has been "much different" from other allies over his war in Iran.

Asked whether Britain is needed as an ally for its action in the Middle East, he added: "It's not going to matter, but (Sir Keir Starmer) should have helped... he should have.

"I mean, France has been great. They've all been great.

"The UK has been much different from others."

Asked about accusations that Sir Keir is pandering to Muslim voters for political reasons following the loss of the Gorton and Denton by-election last week, the President said: "It could be."

Asked what advice he would give to Sir Keir, he said to "open up the North Sea" and "stop people from coming in from foreign lands who hate you".

Trump has repeatedly laid into Sir Sadiq, including publicly lambasting the mayor during a statement to the UN General Assembly in September.

The Mayor of London responded to the insults at the time by saying: “I think the one part that President Trump has got right is that London is becoming a different place.

“We are the greatest city in the world. I suspect that’s one of the reasons why we have record numbers of Americans coming here to holiday, coming here to live, coming here to invest, or coming here to study.

“I literally have no idea why President Trump is so obsessed with this Mayor of London. I’m not sure what he’s got against a liberal, progressive, diverse, successful city like London.”

The widening war between Iran and the US and its allies has entered its fourth day, after the Sir Keir rebuked the US’s approach to the conflict.

Sir Keir on Monday said his Government "does not believe in regime change from the skies", in an apparent criticism of the US President's bombing campaign in the Middle East.

The Prime Minister also told the House of Commons he stood by his decision not to get involved with America and Israel's initial wave of strikes on Iran, and insisted any action by the UK "must always have a lawful basis and a viable thought-through plan".

Trump had criticised Sir Keir's decision not to allow American jets to deploy from UK bases to undertake the strikes, telling the Telegraph he was "very disappointed" in the Prime Minister.

UK bases are now in play in the conflict, but only so the US can strike defensively to protect countries being targeted by Tehran.

This is understood to include the joint US-UK Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean and RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.

The conflict spiralled throughout Monday, with a series of US airstrikes on Iran, while Israel targeted the militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon, allies of the Iranian regime.

Tehran, meanwhile, launched strikes against Israel, and the oil and natural gas production facilities of Gulf states allied to the US.

The Israel Defence Forces said on X on Tuesday that they were "conducting simultaneous targeted strikes against military targets in Tehran and Beirut".

Trump also suggested the war would escalate further, telling CNN that a "big" wave of airstrikes on Iran is yet to come.
