Louisiana health officials have confirmed a Naegleria fowleri infection in a state resident who most likely acquired it while swimming in Lake Claiborne, in Claiborne Parish. The Louisiana Department of Health announced the case Wednesday and issued a Health Alert Network notice to providers across the state the previous day, advising them on symptom tracking and reporting.
The amoeba causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis, a brain infection that the department describes as extremely rare but nearly always fatal, according to reporting from KNOE in Monroe.
