Medical cannabis did not meaningfully improve sleep for adults with insomnia in nine clinical trials, according to a Cochrane review published Oct. 13. Compared with placebo, cannabis products produced little to no clinically meaningful change in sleep quality, total sleep time, or daytime functioning.
The authors were careful not to call cannabis useless. The trials were small, short, and inconsistent, so the certainty of the evidence ranged from very low to low. The findings do not show that medical cannabis is ineffective, only that current research cannot reliably say whether it helps.
