This week marks the 70th anniversary of the UK singles chart. (Not the Top 40, as it’s now known – it wouldn’t be renamed that until 1971, when a postal strike reduced the amount of chart data that could be collected.) To celebrate, the Guardian’s music section is spending the week looking at the ins and outs of the charts over the last seven decades, from the best-known one-hit wonders, chart battles and Christmas hits to what a No 1 is worth today.
We want to hear from you about your relationship with the UK singles chart through the years. What did it mean to you as a kid? What were the key chart rundowns of your young – or not so young – life? What were your singles-buying habits? When did you lose interest – or perhaps you never did?
