Teens charged after police cars rammed by stolen vehicles in Townsville

Police say they were forced to withdraw to a nearby station. (ABC North Qld: Lily Nothling)

Two teenagers have been charged in relation to an incident in which two police cars were rammed with allegedly stolen vehicles in Townsville.

A police officer was taken to hospital after police cars were "actively targeted" and sideswiped by three stolen cars in the Townsville suburb of Vincent in the early hours of March 6.

Officers said they were forced to withdraw to the nearby Mundingburra Police Station for their own safety.

After a five-day search, police arrested two teenagers they allege were inside one of the three stolen cars.

A 16-year-old male was charged with 10 offences including unlicensed driving, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and stealing.

A 14-year-old girl was charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and has appeared in Townsville Childrens Court.

The 16-year-old was remanded in custody and is due to face Townsville Childrens Court this week.

The police investigation is ongoing.

The charges came as Queensland Parliament was expected to begin debating the state government's proposed youth justice law reforms.

The changes bypass the state's Human Rights Act by making breach of bail an offence for children and have been touted by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk as the "most comprehensive response to youth crime in the state".

The LNP has flagged it will support the legislation but will put forward an amendment to remove the provision of detention as a last resort.
