Teddy’s Ice Cream fear their may be a Flake shortage this summer

There’s nothing better than a 99 on a hot summer day, especially when you’re chilling along the coast of Dublin.

But the inside scoop is that ice cream lovers may be left without their sweet treat as Cadbury's are facing a shortage of Flakes.

The crumbly chocolate fingers are vital to the sweet treat combo known as a 99.

Cadbury made its 99 Flakes in Dublin for years, but recently a bulk of its production moved to Egypt causing the situation to melt.

Yasmin Khan, one of the founders of Teddy’s Ice Cream in Dublin, told the Pat Kenny show: “It’s exactly the same as last year.

"Mondelez, the company that owns Cadbury, they short-ordered last year from the producers in Egypt and they put in the same order again this year.

“Things will definitely run short, but I would hope we don’t run out.

“We should be good until the end of August because we kind of preempted this happening – but things will get tight.”

The popular ice-cream parlour is planning to use Flake substitutes from generic brands if they need to.

But 99s haven’t been top sellers for Teddy’s so far this summer according to Yasmin, although she expects to see sales soar this weekend as the weather improves.

She continued: “We’ve been lucky enough that the children in the junior schools haven’t finished yet - that will be next week.

“I have my fingers crossed that next week, the sun will come out and we can sell loads of 99s.”

Dublin Live has reached out Mondelez for comment on the Cadbury's Flake shortage in Ireland.
