Shane van Gisbergen’s bid for a third straight Supercars title has suffered a major blow, crashing out of the second race in Tasmania won by his teammate Broc Feeney.

Penrite veteran David Reynolds made contact with van Gisbergen on lap one, sending the Red Bull Ampol star towards a tyre wall at Symmons Plains.

Van Gisbergen immediately knew his race was over, the first time in almost three years the 34-year-old has failed to finish.

The damage to van Gisbergen’s Chevrolet Camaro was so extensive he is not guaranteed to be able to race in the third and final race of the Tasmania Supersprint on Sunday.

There were mixed emotions in the Triple Eight garage as Feeney won his third race of the season and fourth of his burgeoning career.

The 20-year-old started the 42-lap race from second, but was able to pip pole-sitter and championship leader Brodie Kostecki (second) with a superb drive.

Feeney let out a “yeah boy” over the team radio once he took the chequered flag.

“We came charging through, we had ripper pace there. I’m getting a reputation as Mr Sunday at the moment,” he said.

“The boys in the pit stops have been working so hard, they’ve been grinding out and it’s paying off. Great strategy, but we had a fast car.”

Kostecki’s teammate Will Brown finished third to round out the podium and give Erebus a 2-3 finish.

The final race of the weekend will get underway at 3.50pm.
