Swansea City transfer headlines as striker reveals requirements for promotion push and ex-Swans pair to play in charity game

Your Swansea City headlines for Wednesday, May 4.

Piroe reveals requirements for promotion push

Joel Piroe believes Swansea will be able to challenge for the league title next season if they have a productive summer.

The Swans have endured a mixed campaign under Russell Martin but have found more consistency when it comes to performances and results in the latter stages of the 2021/22 season. Flynn Downes recently stated his desire to see the Swans target Championship glory next term.

And top-scorer Piroe says with a full pre-season and a few additional signings, Martin's men can be serious contenders for promotion in the head coach's second campaign at the club.

"Yes, 100%, we can win the league," responded the Dutchman when asked if winning the league title is a realistic aim next season. "If you see how well we did against Fulham and Bournemouth, then of course, if we have a couple of different players and a full pre-season, we can achieve even better results.

"If you can do that on a regular basis throughout the season then you can think about the title. I think we can play for promotion, 100%, direct or through the play-offs. We will see next season.”

Piroe's latest accolade

Joel Piroe has been included in the WhoScored Championship team of the month for April.

The Dutchman was in scintillating form as the Swans embarked on a nine-game unbeaten run before losing 5-1 to Nottingham Forest. He scored seven times and registered two assists in the penultimate month of the campaign.

And he is the sole Swansea player to be included among the second tier's best performers in April. Piroe features alongside the likes of Nottingham Forest trio Brennan Johnson, Brice Samba and James Garner while Bristol City's Chris Martin and Derby County's Malcolm Ebiowei also make the cut.

No Championship player won more man-of-the-match awards than "bargain buy" Piroe (3) in the month of April. It comes after the 22-year-old won Swansea's top goalscorer of the season and the supporters’ player of the season awards. You can read the full list of winners here.

Nine new stars confirmed for charity game

Nine additional celebrities have been added to the line-up for the club's upcoming Sellebrity Soccer match.

The fixture at the Swansea.com Stadium will be played in memory of supporter Nev Wilshere who tragically passed away last year. Funds generated from the contest will be donated to cancer charity Maggie’s.

Swansea icons Lee Trundle and Leon Britton will both play in the fixture while freestyle footballer Jeremy Lynch and Love Island stars Jake Cornish, Nas Majeed and Dom Lever are among those who will grace the hallowed turf. And it has been confirmed that former Swans Shaun Macdonald and Jazz Richards are also set to feature.

Dan Hatchard, Dean Gaffney, Tom Malone, Stevie Ritchie, Matt Lapinskas, Joe Sealey and Dean Edwards complete the latest batch of celebrities who have confirmed their involvement in the game.

Kick-off is at 3pm on Sunday, May 29. You can purchase tickets here.
