Surprise double Steven Bergwijn transfer decision made after Tottenham heroics vs Leicester City

Tottenham Hotspur hero Steven Bergwijn appears likely to stay in north London after Ajax moved onto alternative transfer targets.

The Dutch winger was linked with a winter exit from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with it being reported that Fabio Paratici was open to selling the former PSV Eindhoven man.

Ajax emerged as potential contenders, with reports suggesting that they were keen to take Bergwijn back to the Eredivisie following an underwhelming couple of seasons in north London.

However, it now appears that he is set to remain at Spurs, with a number of decisions having been taken following his stunning brace in the team’s exhilarating comeback win against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Firstly, Ajax appear to have moved onto alternative targets, with the Dutch giants attempting to strike a deal with Juventus for utility man Mohamed Ihatteren.

As per ESPN, Ajax are edging towards an agreement with the Italian giants regarding a loan deal. He was originally linked with a move to fellow Eredivisie club FC Utrecht but a move to the Johan Cruyff Arena now appears to be his most likely destination.

Capable of playing in the middle and on both flanks, it would be unlikely that Ajax would pursue Bergwijn after securing 19-year-old Ihattaren, meaning that the former would be limited for options should he want to depart Spurs.

In any case, current Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has hinted that the winger is firmly in his plans.

Speaking to BT Sport after the dramatic victory at the King Power Stadium, the Italian said: "I think I spoke about Steven in the past and I said he was an important player and he has specific characteristics for this team. Nobody has these types of characteristics.

"He's very good one versus one, he's good technically, he can beat a man, he's a striker. If he is in good physical condition and he is fit, then for me, he's an important choice I can make in the starting 11 or in the game."

Bergwijn still has three-and-a-half years left to run on his current contract in north London having scored seven goals in 65 appearances since his arrival - two of those coming in a dramatic couple of minutes in the east Midlands.
