Suntory Minus 196’s Giant Vending Machine Is Back & Sorry Opera House, There’s A New Icon In Town

Good news everyone! A giant vending machine is coming to a city near you (if you live in Sydney, that is). That’s right, it’s back, baby. Suntory’s Minus 196 EXTREME Vending Machine is centre stage again at SXSW Sydney ®. Hallelujah.

It’s rare we get universal good news, and yet here it is.

Now, let us partake in a visualisation exercise: you’re strolling through Tumbalong Park, minding your own business, when BOOM, a 12-metre-tall vending machine looms before you. Is it a dream? A mirage maybe? No, it’s 100% real and free to enter.

You venture in. Inside the three-storey, fully interactive Suntory playground you find multiple levels of immersive art, music and Suntory Minus 196 drinks (duh). If you were lucky enough to go last year, you’ll be stoked to hear there are new levels and experiences to see and do this time round!

On the first floor, you’ll enter the infinity level and be greeted with the vision of 100’s of Suntory Minus 196’s. Heading up to the second level you’ll find the new ‘Tokyo Neon Nightlife’ zone, designed to mimic the vibrant nightlife of Shibuya and Shinjuku. Didn’t get that Japan holiday in? Now’s your chance to experience a taste of Tokyo, minus the jet lag.

As you ascend to the third floor, you are greeted by a full-on rooftop bar with panoramic views of SXSW Sydney ® and the Sydney skyline that will make your IG followers weep with envy — yes, all 300 of them!

Oh and the lemons — we must discuss the lemons. Surrounding this three-storey behemoth is the expanded Lemon Garden. It’s basically a huge beer garden (but obviously better), dotted with massive inflatable lemons and another bar (of course). It’s the perfect spot to chill out, enjoy some Suntory Minus 196, and think up a plan on how to take one of those giant lemons home. Kidding, don’t steal the lemons (but if you must, grab one for me too).

Feeling peckish? Never fear. Tokyo Taco will be providing the goods in the Lemon Garden, serving up an innovative fusion of Japanese and Mexican flavours. Why not try its iconic Miso Baked Salmon Taco in a crispy nori shell that pairs perfectly with your ice-cold Suntory Minus 196 – whether it’s Double Lemon, Double Grape or Double Peach you fancy.

Wait, there’s more. Expect music from local DJs, immersive art experiences, and prizes, glorious prizes. That’s right, you’ll have the chance to cop sick Minus 196 merch, free drinks and more.

It’s all going down throughout the duration of SXSW Sydney ® (October 14–20), so mark it in your cal, and be sure to get your butt to Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour.

See ya there.
