Sunderland suffered a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Norwich City as they looked to life after Alex Neil. With Neil on the verge of being confirmed as Stoke City new manager, the Scot's erstwhile assistant Martin Canning was in temporary charge as the Black Cats took on the Canaries at the Stadium of Light.
And Sunderland turned in a stirring performance against a side that was competing in the Premier League last season. Ross Stewart saw a volley touched onto the crossbar and Ellis Simms saw a header hit the post, as they created a series of chances.
But Josh Sargent's goal 15 minutes from time settled matters, and gave Dean Smith's Norwich a victory they scarcely deserved.
