Subaru Drops Secret WRX And BRZ Specials On September 27

  • Subaru will reveal limited-production 2027 WRX and BRZ special editions on September 27 at Boxerfest in York, Pennsylvania.
  • Subaru called them "enthusiast-focused special edition models" based on the WRX and the BRZ.
  • The single teaser image shows a WRX fitted with a large rear wing.

Subaru is not saying much, and that is the point. The automaker confirmed it will pull the wraps off limited-production 2027 WRX and BRZ special editions on September 27, then handed out a single teaser image and almost nothing else.

The reveal happens at Boxerfest, Subaru's annual enthusiast gathering at the York Fairgrounds in York, Pennsylvania. Subaru calls the pair "enthusiast-focused special edition models" built on the existing WRX and BRZ, without naming trims, power figures, or production counts.

Subaru WRX And BRZ Specials Debut September 27

Here is what Subaru has actually put in writing: two 2027 model-year cars, one reveal date, one location, and confirmation that they are limited-production, enthusiast-focused editions. Everything else circulating online right now is inference drawn from a single teaser photo.

That distinction is important because the current WRX base model returns to the lineup this year, and the automaker has been reshuffling WRX trims all year. A limited special edition slotting above the tS would fit that pattern without needing a new nameplate.

Subaru's own quote presents these as variants of existing cars. "These two enthusiast-focused special edition models are based on the WRX and the BRZ," the company said, language that stops well short of promising an STI revival.

Context helps here too. Japan is winding down the current WRX S4 as noise and emissions rules tighten there, while Subaru of America still treats the WRX as a core performance sedan. Recent WRX sales figures from August show volumes improving over last year, helped by the 2026 price cuts and the return of the base trim.

The 2027 WRX Teaser Points To A Large Rear Wing

The teaser image shows a WRX wearing a wing large enough that outlets immediately reached for the STI comparison. Reports noted the resemblance, but resemblance is not confirmation, and Subaru has not used the STI name anywhere in its release.

The current WRX tS already leans performance-first, running a turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four rated at 271 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired with STI-tuned dampers, Brembo brakes, Recaro seats, and 19-inch wheels. A special edition built from that base would not need a new badge to justify a bigger wing.

Subaru already sells a sharper answer in Japan with the BRZ STI Sport Type RA which pairs ZF dampers, Brembo brakes, and BBS wheels with reworked engine internals. Some of that hardware migrating into a US-market BRZ special edition is plausible, though Subaru has not confirmed it.

Subaru will settle the guessing on September 27 when the actual specs and names finally surface at Boxerfest.

Motor1's Take: Boxerfest will show whether Subaru keeps a US performance halo with limited runs or brings back a true high-performance model. That is significant to enthusiasts and dealers.

If the cars get upgraded hardware, buyers will judge them on parts and drive feel. Production numbers and pricing will tell whether they’re collectibles or ordinary limited editions.
