Would You Send Money to Someone You’ve Never Met? Romance Scammers Know How to Make You Say Yes

Would You Send Money to Someone You've Never Met? Romance Scammers Know How to Make You Say Yes
A romance scam often begins with affection and familiar daily messages before turning into a request for money. Never send cash, gift cards, or cryptocurrency to an online love interest you haven’t met in person – Shutterstock

The first request for money might arrive after weeks of sweet messages, late-night conversations, and promises of a future together. It might sound less like a scam than an awkward favor between two people who care about each other.

That is precisely why romance scams work. Criminals create fake identities, build emotional connections, and gradually turn affection into financial pressure. A supposed emergency, a canceled visit, or an investment opportunity can become the reason someone sends money to a person they’ve never met in real life. The uncomfortable part is that the victim may recognize the warning signs in someone else’s relationship while missing them in their own.
