Strong winds expected as Met Office issues Christmas Eve weather warning

THE Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind on Christmas Eve.

It covers large swathes of northern Scotland and will come into force from midday on Sunday December 24 until 3am on Christmas morning.

The Met Office said that “strong winds will bring the potential for some disruption” and warned people that travel disruption, damage to buildings and power cuts are all possible.

There is the potential for gusts as high as 60 or 70mph across Lewis, Orkney, Sutherland and Caithness.

Telling people what to expect, the Met Office said:

  • There is a small chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected
  • There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs
  • There is a small chance of injuries from flying debris
  • There is a small chance that injuries could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • There is a small chance that some roads and bridges could close

Meanwhile, a yellow weather warning for rain covering large parts of the west of Scotland will come into force at midnight on Saturday and last until 11.45pm the same day.

A separate warning for snow and ice will also come into force from 9pm on Friday December 22 until 12pm on Saturday December 23.

It covers large parts of the north and north east of Scotland.
