Stirling Albion will continue their preparations for season 2022/23 this week with the competitive action getting underway early next month.
Pre-season training began at Stirling University last Thursday with a double session for the squad on Saturday and manager Darren Young will continue to put his players through their paces as they build up for the Premier Sports Cup Group A opener at Dumbarton on Saturday, July 9.
Young said: “I’m happy how things are going so far. We’ve had three good sessions, although there were one or two players still away on holiday as is usually the case at this time of year. They are a fit bunch of boys and I trust them to be putting in any work they miss with the group.
“We have a first-team squad of 16 signed up so I’m happy with the progress we are making on that front. Cammy Clark was the most recent addition after joining from Annan last week – he can play left-back or left centre-half and is a player who had been on the radar for a while.
“I was actually interested last year when I was at East Fife and I think Stirling were too, but he was going to miss the first part of the season because of an injury so it didn’t work out. He obviously came back into the Annan team and made a big impact in them reaching the play-offs.
“We have missed out on one or two targets but that’s just the way it goes sometimes. We obviously still need to add a few players but we’ve brought five in already. It’s only the middle of June so time is on our side and there are plenty of players out there – it is just about getting the right ones rather than making a signing for the sake of it.”
Stirling Albion will find out their schedule for 2022/23 when the fixtures for cinch League Two are published on Friday. SPFL newcomers Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic are among the sides the Binos will face in the season ahead.
The action gets under way on Saturday, July 30 and the season ends on Saturday, May 6, 2023.
Meanwhile, winger Nathan Flanagan has joined rivals Forfar Athletic after leaving Forthbank last month.
The former Raith Rovers, St Mirren and Annan player made 31 league appearances for Stirling last season, scoring once, but has now agreed a deal with Gary Irvine’s men.
