Stewartry Rugby Club adds We're A Knockout triumph to incredible year of success

Stewartry Rugby Club continued their incredible year with another success on Saturday.

Their latest triumph came in We’re A Knockout, which took place at Greenlaw on Saturday. The fun day was organised by the Anderson family from Kirkcudbright to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

And community pharmacist Soenaid Anderson was delighted with the day, with more than £4,500 being raised.

She said: “It was amazing. I think we had the same number of spectators as people competing.

“It was absolutely overwhelming. Four teams have already been asking if they can book in for next year – I haven’t even decided if I’m definitely doing it.

“I think the sun made it – usually the water games are dreaded but folk loved it. It was like being in a giant paddling pool.

“The rugby club was just so accommodating and I’m proud of the whole community. It was a joint effort and everyone had a fantastic day. It was win-win for the club and win-win for the charity.”

Twenty-four teams took part, with the four best performers taking part in the final.

Stewartry RFC came out on top with Stewartry Young Farmers second, Stewartry Tyres third and a team from FitActive in Dalbeattie in fourth.

The family organised the fundraiser as 19-year-old daughter, Maisie, was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 10 years old.

Soenaid’s sister Emma and partner Megan from the Bottom Bar at The Market Inn in Castle Douglas offered a raffle prize of a cocktails and combo for two, with the Picken family providing two nights in the Domes By The Sea at Torrs Farm.

It’s reckoned the raffles alone raised around £1,800.

And the rugby club did a roaring trade too, selling more than 400 burgers as they kept competitors and spectators alike fed and watered.
