Stewartry RFC hosting Scotland's biggest women's rugby sevens tournament

Scotland’s biggest women’s rugby sevens tournament is taking place in the Stewartry this weekend.

The Women’s 7 Series is being hosted at Stewartry RFC’s Greenlaw home on Saturday afternoon.

It’s the second of three legs of the competition, defending champs Corstorphine Cougars taking the honours in Glasgow last weekend.

Sirens vice captain Lauren Nicholson said: “It’s the biggest women’s sevens event in Scotland.

“There will be 10 teams coming – from the central belt, Fife and Inverurie as well so it has quite a good spread across the whole of Scotland.

“There will be 150 players there.”

Each leg of the competition has an individual winner, with the overall champion crowned after the final leg in Edinburgh.

And as well as the rugby, there will be plenty around Greenlaw to keep the whole family entertained.

Lauren said: “The young farmers have a tug of war team they’ll be bringing down. There will be a competition for teams of six against the young farmers with a trophy.

“The Doddie Weir Foundation are coming down with a tent full of goodies and have also donated a lot of raffle prizes.

“The Doddie Weir Cup is coming from the SRU although it will only be there between 1pm and 3pm.”

There will also be a variety of food vans and stalls, including Country Kitchen and Glen Urr Ice Cream, and entertainment for kids such as face painters.

The bar will be open, with a gin and prosecco bar thanks to Dark Art Distillery in Kirkcudbright, with live music from The Rewind, a DJ set from Kieran Marshall and raffles adding to the fun.

And there will be a camp site open to everyone who wants to stay the night.

Lauren added: “Anybody else who wants to get involved in sponsorship or food vans, there are still slots open.

“We’re not charging anyone for bringing food vans, it’s more of a community day.”

The action starts at Greenlaw from noon on Saturday.
