Steven Gerrard fires transfer warning as ex Rangers boss pulls no Aston Villa punches

Determined Steven Gerrard has put Aston Villa's players on alert and insists he's aiming to improve "every single department" at the club.

The former Rangers boss has come out swinging during his first transfer window at the club after landing Lucas Digne from Everton and Philipe Coutinho from Barcelona.

And Gerrard has told his fringe men to give it everything in the search for game time as he insists "the best players play".

Villa currently sit in 12th but are keen to move up the Premier League table ahead of his first return to Everton since his Liverpool days.

But Gerrard is hell-bent on getting better both on and off the pitch.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "The players have to accept that I’m going to try to improve this club in every single department, so if someone arrives in your position, you’re going have to accept it and fight for game time.

"The best players play at the end of the day."

And his work is continuing after he secured keeper Emi Martinez on a new long-term deal until 2027.

The Argentina international is adored at Villa Park and has established himself as one of the finest keepers in the Premier League since joining from Arsenal in 2020.
