Stand Up To Racism announces new anti-fascist rally to take place this week

STAND Up To Racism has announced a new anti-fascist rally to take place on Friday.

It comes after thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in England following fears that more than 100 far-right riots were set to take place.

There have not been any riots in Scotland since the violence started in the wake of the Southport stabbings.

However, First Minister John Swinney said it was important to remain “vigilant” and that Police Scotland had “comprehensive” plans in place to deal with any riots.

In a post on Twitter/X, Stand Up To Racism announced that a “stop the far-right” rally is to take place on Friday, August 9 in Bathgate.

It said: “After yesterday’s stunning anti-fascist mobilisations, drive the racist far-right out of our streets.

“Bathgate tomorrow. Stop any intimidation & harassment at Cairn Hotel. Calling on local anti-racists to come together tomorrow.”

The post says the rally will begin at 6pm.

The organisation has also arranged another rally which will take place in Paisley tomorrow, beginning at the slightly earlier time of 5.30pm.

It is due to be held outside the Watermill Hotel in the town.

Many riots have taken place in England and Northern Ireland over the past week after the fatal stabbings of three children in Southport.

Police Scotland did however issue a statement on Wednesday saying it had “no intelligence” to suggest a rally would take place in George Square despite unverified social media claims suggesting this was the case.

The First Minister has demanded social media companies “make a lot of improvement” in cracking down on “false information” after regulatory body Ofcom reminded Facebook and Twitter/X of their duties to crack down on disinformation.

Swinney’s comments were echoed by Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar after he joined Holyrood party leaders at Bute House to be briefed on the situation on Wednesday.
